The Summer Pool

Adapted swimming lessons at the Plunge.

…………………………………The Summer Pool

…………………………………Oh,
…………………………………they have the radio turned up
…………………………………so you can’t hear the cries of the
…………………………………………children
…………………………………as they refuse to get in the pool
…………………………………as they drown

…………………………………we say to each other
…………………………………tired of seeing children get their own way.

…………………………………they’ve boosted the chlorine
…………………………………so we won’t get sick from
…………………………………the urine and spit and body fats which flood
…………………………………the pool this time every year.

…………………………………Oh,
…………………………………look at all the red suited
…………………………………swimming instructors
…………………………………working with the little ones in the shallow end
…………………………………not a bit of smiling passion among them.

…………………………………There, look at all the old farts
…………………………………expressing opinions on everything
…………………………………as they soak their pains away
…………………………………in the hot tub while ooohing and ahhing
…………………………………all over those cute, tiny children
…………………………………lined up apprehensively at the edge of the water

…………………………………Oh,
…………………………………the old folks also pee and fart and spit
…………………………………into the swimming pool
…………………………………and so add to the bacteria count
…………………………………and the laugh count behind all that grey
…………………………………while discussing if they too have to wear
…………………………………swim diapers
…………………………………and if those diapers come in denim for elders.

  2. This is not a nice thought and I may never enter a public swimming pool again. Now that my emotions are calmer I will go re-read your poem to learn something about writing poetry!

  4. Oh wow! That's it! NO swimming pools for me, not that I can swim, mind you. There's the ocean for me but... I always wonder what's there, too. Box jellyfish most likely.

  5. Makes me wish for a private pool. Great word picture of the "old farts" in the hot tub. Yup, the life cycle in action.
