Change

Gunport on the Surprise, Festival of Sail, 2010.

Yesterday and Today

Himself: Worked, did desk estimates that arrived via email. Out to dinner with Don at the Chicken Pie Shop.

Herself: …and the quilt blog too: Yes, I am having a good day. I’m still working on my ‘Parts” poem so I have hopes that it can be read in a week. Right now if feels like three separate poems. Wednesday didn’t swim, did write, did go to the store where the first book volunteer returned so I’m not the Thursday book lady any more. Today swim, replace the errored poem in the chapbook, and go visit a local printer to price having more of them printed this time correctly.

My Babylonian Captivity: Do stop in and read Tugster's experience as a human shield. He writes that, “ i was captured in kuwait (where i was teaching in the kuwaiti air force)….”

Gratitude: G had a good but light day.

Where have I been these last few months? It’s as if I just stepped out my window, and the world had moved on without me.

‘Why did they kick us out of our classroom,” I asked JJ this afternoon. But I no longer attend that class…it isn’t mine, but there I am using the possessive.

“Where is the ship?” I asked the librarian at the corner library. No big brass ship model in the library hall. The library looks bare and I resent the change.

“Welcome back,” I said slightly grudgingly to the lovely, wheel chair bound lady who used to do the books. She’s back. I’m outta a job. I’m grumpy….and you think at my age it wouldn’t matter. I chew myself out and remind myself that I was getting tired of coming in two days a week anyway.
Lipstick colors change, bakeries stop making one bread and start another, and even my favorite perfume is no longer made.

I grind the gears in my truck and wince. Driving even seems new to me as the last fourteen months he has done most of the driving. I slide into old lady drivership behind the wheel of a behemoth until I crank the volume up on the rock and roll. Beware of grey hair and shaky hands behind the wheel of that roaring truck heading your way.

Today there’s no poetry class. Do I expect the world to keep on its course just to keep me content with my lot. Silly me.

  1. Change is challenge. But when there is no change...it means you are dying. I like change...just not too much all at once. Fall is my favorite season...so waiting for that change.

  2. Isn't it amazing how quickly life can pass us by? On the other hand I can be caught up in something and be gone two weeks only to discover I didn't miss a thing.

I agree with Tabor. Change is absolutely necessary. Sometimes though I'd like the world to stop for just a day or to.

Life is constant adjustment to change.

  4. I have to smile at the picture of you crusing in your big, loud truck, grey hair flowing in the wind. Go, Maggie!

  5. I like fall 'cause the kids go back to school and shopping is less crowded.

  6. When we're younger, I think we expect things to change. When we are older, we get used to something more quickly and then want it to stay the same. I don't remember ever really noticing changes so much. But the world goes on. We can either go with it or stay behind and.....well, you know what that would mean.

  7. Ah, a truck driving mama! Change just keep right on coming, sometimes whole buildings have been built on a street I haven't driven on for a month. Thanks for dropping by my page, I really appreciate it.
