Black Friday Madness

The Great Geezer departed our bed many hours pre-dawn heading to Fry’s and a Door Buster, $218.00, HP Notebook. I was still shivering in the predawn 32 degrees, when he returned not only with a brand new laptop but with a story.

He’d headed to Fry’s first. There he found the truly ginormous parking lot almost full and a five wide line snaking down and around the building out of sight. He decided to not stand in line freezing to fight two thousand people for an older HP notebook than offered by the other stores.

Skipping Best Buy, he arrived at our neighborhood Radio Shack to find he was number four in line. Ta-da! For $349.00 he was able to purchase the newest HP notebook. It has 320 gig hard drive, 3 gigs of RAM, WiFi, Windows 7, Word with advertisements....(and what is this), and operates at the speed of light. Not top of the line at all. It’s identical with his work laptop.

He announced that this is our Christmas Present to ourselves. This four pound beauty replaces an old, 7100 series, 17 inch, HP top of the line laptop (in it's day) that weights twenty pounds. He will strip the HP and of all the fun stuff, and I will take it along to the Cancer Society thrift shop where they can sell it for 80 bucks. We bought it there for that.

What goes around, comes around indeed.

  1. Thanks, I needed this. I am in a quandry over which laptop to buy for myself. This helps.

  2. Oh Mage, did you read about Best Buys match it prices? He could have asked Best Buy to match the Fry price and they should have done it. I got the tip from Bloomberg channel this morning! On the other hand, sounds like he got a great deal anyhow. I'm always suspicious of those older electronic items.

G was really brave to get out this morning! I don't mind going out, on the freeways or even being in the stores--it's just those parking lots I'd like to avoid.

  4. You are both far smarter than you can imagine. I am so glad you were rewarded by this good thinking on his part. They did say that many of the 'deals' are older models or dated products to clear the shelves.

  5. Well, it will be ten or fifteen years before we need another laptop.

  9. Hope you had a delightful Thanksgiving. Must be fun to have a new laptop. I'm looking at buying one once I get my first teaching job signed. The new ones are a big improvement and no longer as costly as they once were.
