California Roll: The VW Van

Yesterday and Today

Himself: Slowly but surely, all day, techs worked to make the new program in his computer functional. He quit work in time to watch “Circus” on KPBS.

Herself: with the quilt blog too: Doctor’s office, got an appointment with a orthopedic hip man, cleared two bookcases at the store, spent over an hour sitting in my kitchen watching the dishwasher run…it didn’t flood the kitchen, dinner with Don at Brian’s, and last round of cards read putting me on a new life path which has a focus on meditation.

My Babylonian Captivity: Do stop in and read Tugster's experience as a human shield. He writes that, “ i was captured in kuwait (where i was teaching in the kuwaiti air force)….”

I fell in love. With this VW Van.

I had a 62 VW camper van oh so many years ago. A very faded red van. Mine was a 6 volt. This one looks newer, but under its most dramatic of paint jobs, who knows what lurks.

I never did find out who owned this work of art. It has an agent.

James Morrison between the sun and the moon. And too, every hippy vehicle had bumper stickers but none painted on with this quality.

I was just swept away by the portraits, the colors and passion that so accurately evoke the age. The highest quality of work on a vehicle that I’ve ever seen lie here on the surface of this VW Van.

Curly, Moe, and Larry ready to catch a wave.

Who ever did this work and these portraits was an exceptional artist. Art doesn’t just live on walls of a museum these days….tho this van is sitting in a museum, it runs.

Timothy Leary would have been proud of this portrait of an Electric Cool Aide fantasy.

The truth was, we couldn’t keep ours running. We would pack for a trip, and just a few miles up the road, our van would die.

Santana rides forever in blue.

We found ourselves the owner of a multicolored smugglers, 1953 Chevy van named Maxwell Silverhammer. He didn’t like me.

Hendrix, peace, and love. What more could one want.

Didn’t we all have our hippy moments even if we weren’t dancing in the streets? College for me, though I went to the first San Diego Love In, I had two kids and two jobs too.

Peace and love, baby. We sang all their songs right along with them.

Didn’t we all.

  1. Didn't we!
I'm sitting here singing "This is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius...!" So glad I came of age in that era.
