Veterans Day 2010

We all have our wars. I was in the Army during the Vietnam War, but because it wasn’t acknowledged at the time, I’m classified as a cold war veteran. G is a Vietnam era vet. My first husband was a Korean War vet. Our father’s were WWII vets, mine in Fort Hood, his in India.

Our fathers were alcoholics with diseases that were never acknowledged. Many of the fathers of our generation were badly damaged not just by war but the depression that came before the war. Not one of us had a regular childhood as a result leaving us to wonder what a regular childhood was.

This young boy had a loving family, always a dog, and severe learning disabilities. He fought his war from a desk in Texas, and he came home just as damaged as if he had been to the front.

I thank all people in the military for their service today, and always I think of Gunny’s great-grandson in Afghanistan.
