Four

....watch this.

Sunset view from the stern of the Monarch of the Seas, 2007.

My favorite watch was dead. The Great Geezer kindly led the search for a watch of similar size and color. We found several but in the 400 dollar price range. I was thinking more in the twenty. Hey, this is a watch that’s going to be battered a bit for the rest of its life. So we visited Targets, malls, sports stores, major big stores, none of them had quite the watch I was looking for.

I wanted one smaller than a man’s but with a big, easy to read face, and one that I could see at night. That’s the watch I was looking for. I’m sure the Macy’s sales person didn’t believe me when I said I had all the blingy watches I need, but I do. I gave mother’s diamond watches to the kids, but I have mine, the Geezers mother’s, and the Geezers grandmother’s pretty little 1950’s watches that I’ve put black ribbon bands on. I didn’t need bling, but I did need utilitarian.

A political comment here. I boycott Walmart.

So bearing G’s Christmas bonus, a Walmart Gift Card, we visited our far-out-into-the-city Walmart. There we found a Timex watch exactly like my last Timex watch. One. The last one….and as we could see, perhaps the last one in the city. There it is now….ticking on my wrist and clear to see any time of the day or night. With the face upwards. Progress.

  1. I've done exactly the same search, but I never found the one I wanted. I tried going without, which is easy as long as I'm in the States, but when I went to Japan 2 years ago, I had to cave. I got a too small Timex, but it lights up and I can see it. What happened to all those largish, readable ones for under $20?

  2. The last watch I bought -- with a large face and clear numerals, as well as an expansion bracelet -- cost me $15 at a jewelry show. I didn't replace it because I am not supposed to wear bracelets on that arm any more.

I read the time on my phone -- the only thing I can see on it without glasses!

  3. We get so wise in old age. Diamonds are nice for showing off...but when you reach a certain age, you know longer need to do that. You are the smartest, nicest, prettiest person in the room and you know that...at least I do!

  4. I meant 'no longer' and I 'know' that...!

  5. I was about to recommend Timex before I read it in your blog.

I switched to Timex when I discovered it would cost an arm and a leg to get my expensive (gift) watch repaired. Who needs that. Beides, Timex takes a licking and keeps on ticking.

  6. I boycott Wal-mart, too. I have a couple easy-to-read watches but iit costs more to have the batteries replaced than I paid for the watches. There's something so wrong in that.

  7. I am such a smacker when it comes to watches. I break them constantly, so it makes no sense to spend a ton of money. Just a few more days, lady!

  8. I just refound my Westclox lapel pin watch that I got when I was about 16 (eons ago!). It doesn't work but it is so pretty. Tried to find a value for it online. I found the watch but the Ebay cost wasn't available. I am thinking of taking it to a jeweler to see if it can be repaired.
And I usually buy cheap watches too....

  10. This is the kind of watch I need, too, except add the requirement of being extra long for my chubby wrist. I have no watch, as I haven't found one.

    Walmart boycotter, too.

  11. I found Timex Expedition for ladies. Only problem is that there was one in the city. Maybe your city will have one too....or on line.

  12. You have some pretty shots from your cruises – it makes me homesick to be on a cruise again (we came back from our last one last month.) I looked at the questions for your mom and the picture after her wedding in 1939. My parents married in 1936 and I need to do a post on that. Luckily my mom wrote a short memoir before she passed away. This is what I used when I wrote the posts about her childhood, but I don’t have much on my dad.

  13. We boycott WM, too, but sometimes you just have to cross your own lines -- or it would be like cutting off your nose to spite your face. I still have the Timex my mother gave me for high school graduation!

  14. I was going to suggest Timex--that's what I wear. I too have one with large numbers that glow in the dark, but I don't like the band on it, and always wear the Timex with the goldplate wearing off and showing silver edges. We're used to each other that watch and I.
