28 Years/14 Years

1983

Ba had her eye on a really cute guy, and invited him to my cottage to dinner. He knew a predator when he saw one, and he said he would come if he could bring his roommate. I took one look at the roommate, speaking of predators, and the roommate stayed on for 28 years.

14 years ago, my stepfather died. Mother’s money was in trust for him, and it came to me after he died. I no longer qualified for free medical treatment at the VA. The roommate and I married so I could get medical insurance. We happily celebrate two anniversaries.

Such bare bones to describe a passionate love affair that morphed into a delightful friendship. There’d be no other reason to go paint walls in a freezing museum Saturday morning in the rain just to be with him.

Dinner at the Bali Hai, an old local favorite but half empty mid week. Our local paper says the new Chef offers a new menu which brings the Bali Hai into the 21st century and away from the Tiki image. George had a very modern beef roll appetizer then one item off the old menu. He said the beef was better than the entre. I had a carrot ginger soup with a pork tenderloin cooked to perfection served with brussel sprouts in a light soy and bacon based sauce. Crème Brule to share as the city turned to sparkle and lights under a darkening sky.
