Anticipation

I’ve been re-reading Reeve Lindbergh’s book “No More Words.” It’s a moving, touching journal of her mother’s last years living mostly silently up the hill from Reeve’s house.

What awoke me to this journey was buying a replacement volume for Anne Morrow Lindbergh’s “Bring Me a Unicorn.” At the register, the clerk asked if I knew that Charles Lindbergh had another family in Germany. I dithered a bit, came home, and Googled “Charles Lindbergh’s families.” I discovered that he didn’t just have one more family, he had three.

After a couple of days of angry disillusionment, I picked up Reeve Lindbergh’s volume and was charmed by her voice. Following up with this on ABE Books and Alibris, I ordered two more of her works. I also had one of AML’s journals to replace, used, from ABE books. Google also opened the door to purchasing a new volume of Anne Morrow Lindbergh’s diaries entitled “Against the Wind and Tide: Letters and Journals, 1947 - 1986.”

I’ve been journaling doggedly, ignoring my teen aged pages of angst, since 1974. AML’s volumes had helped give me a handle on my own life when it was fragmented and sad. The new book will be released in 2012, and I am filled with anticipation and gratitude that we will have this last volume in her voice.

  1. It is sad when our heros turn out to be human after all......but how great that you have found treasures to read and reread.

  2. It's a strange thing about biographies, especially autobiographies. They always make me want to write -- and maybe argue. I usually find something to admire.

I will never understand how AML lived through losing a child, with a husband who refused to discuss it.

  3. Lindbergh was indeed a cad. His wife must have been a saint.

How wonderful her energy and goodness buoyed you when you needed it.

  7. Three families, that's new to me. My sons' high school was named for Lindy, I wondered if they would have named it something else if the school namers had known. Many of the front runners in life are odd ducks, or eagles if you will. I'll have to read the book.

  8. The only book I have read more than once is GONE WITH THE WIND, which I read in high school. Since then, I read books only once.
