14 And Sew On

After puttering then seeing the “J Edgar” film, himself came home to touch up paint. I stitched here and there. The quilting on the blue quilt is like, but a very lite version, of this quilting on the “House Quilt.”

J. Edgar Hoover, as portrayed by Clint Eastwood, was a very righteous and selfish man. Eastwood gives us a slow and darkened painting of Hoover unmitigated by any good he might have done as founding director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Wikipedia says, “Hoover is credited with building the FBI into a large and efficient crime-fighting agency, and with instituting a number of modern innovations to police technology, such as a centralized fingerprint file and forensic laboratories.” My opinion is that the Hoover FBI reign also echoes with paranoia, irrationalities, secrecy, lies, hatred, and back stabbing.

Both G and I will go see the reflective “The Way” again, but not this film.

  1. You are the second person who has said they didn't like the movie....surprising since Eastwood usually tells such great stories.

  2. I suspect that one's opinion of J. Edgar Hoover is dependent on when one became aware of him. His early work in building an effective tool against major crime was amazing.

I had the feeling, by the time I was in my twenties, that he looked at what he had accomplished, saw that it was good, and inferred that he must be God. It is a lot of years since I've had complete trust in the FBI, and that's too bad.

I'm not planning to see the film. For what it costs to go to the movies, I can have my nails done. That pleases me a lot longer.

  3. I didn't think it would be a good film based on the review in the Post. Thanks for the tip. The Way looks more promising. Dianne

  6. Gosh... I haven't even heard of this film. I must really be out of it. I think it would be interesting to learn something of this complex, powerful and arrogant man.

  7. Clint Eastwood was the director but the actor playing J. Edgar was Leonardo DiCaprio.

  8. Forgot...I think Harriet's observation (paragraph #2) was a good analysis of the man.
