Salisbury Steak

Have you ever considered the Salisbury steak.  For some missbegotten reason, I was thought it was pounded tough meat cooked like hamburger or a hamburger stead with salt and pepper added.

Our online source of information tells us that:

“Salisbury steak is a dish made from a blend of ground beef and other ingredients, which is shaped to resemble a steak, and is usually served with gravy or brown sauce.  Hamburg steak is a similar product, but differs in ingredients. Wikipedia

Allrecipes has “seasoned hamburger in an onion gravy.”  Hamburger mind you.  Ree Drummond gives one hamburger plus bread crumbs, and seasonings.  Hers is very like my “Chili Meatloaf recipe.”  Martha Stewart’s is similar to my favorite old meat loaf recipe that calls for milk and herbs.

Con Agra attempts to win us over with: Beef, water, pork, soy protein concentrate, bread crumbs (bleached wheat flour, salt yeast, sugar), Textured soy protein (soy flour, caramel coloring), salt flavor, beef flavor (contains autolyzed beef extract, disodium inosinate, disodium guanylate, mono-and diglycerides, xanthan gum), hydrolyzed soy protein, flavor, caramel color,  vegetable juice concentrate, (celery, carrot, onion, leek), bacon flavor (maltodextrin, natural and artificial flavor, (contains butter) partially hydrogenated soybean oil, hydrolyzed corn protein, modified food starch, natural smoke flavor, autolyzed yeast extract, disodium inosinate, disodium guanylate, bacon fat.

This isn’t mentioning the ersatz veggies or potatoes neither of which looks like the package cover all of which obviously needs to be rethought.

“From my kitchen to yours”, says Marie Callender.

“Never again,” says Mage to Marie.

  • Himself:  Hating to limit foods. Hasn’t followed up.  Feeling pretty good.
  • Herself:  Feeling better at last.  Serving a baked potato, green beans with tomatoes, and a small tossed green salad for dinner.  Simple.
  • Reading:  I’ll let you know.
  • Gratitudes:  Survived a morning folding meeting.  Very grateful someone remembered coffee and donuts.

    1. If I can't pronounce the names of the ingredients, then I shouldn't eat it. I try to live by that principle. Sometimes convenience trumps health however.

    2. What do you fold during your meeting?? I agree with Marie Smith -- I prefer home cooked from scratch but anymore, I go by the carb content primarily.

    3. I think the hydrolyzed soy protein was the tipping point

    4. These pre-prepared meals are so high in salt, sugar and fats that the calories are off the charts. Also, the caramel flavoring is carcinogenic according to Consumer Reports. Then you add in all the artificial non-food ingredients and no wonder our bodies rebel. When I was eating alone I used to buy these and now do regret that! The gravy made from scratch makes me wonder how other gravies are made? I also thought it was a pounded steak or tough piece of meat! Your REAL meal sounds perfect.

    5. Although I've not tried Marie Callender's frozen meals, I do occasionally buy Stauffers meatloaf to have in the freezer on those days I just cannot come up with something to eat. That rarely happens as we almost always have beans and tortillas in the fridge to tide us over until I can grocery shop. I have found some frozen gluten free tamales that are really good and have few ingredients. They are also vegan which bodes well for us.

    6. That reminds me that I have a salisbury steak recipe that is pretty good. It only has one meat source though. I've never had it any other way. For some reason, I had forgotten about the recipe, so thanks for the reminder as I run out of ideas for ground beef.

    7. I think this goes with Jell-o and Ritz mock apple pie.
