GORDO'S

The 1940’s table with the plant called Monica.

October is almost gone.  Homes here are beginning to glow with witches, black cats, orange lights, and other Halloween décor.  Popup stores can be found in every neighborhood sporting giant Halloween signs.  There’s a family at the end of our building that has even decorated their roof.  We cheer them on.

But we don’t participate.  There are few kids in our neighborhood.  Sometimes hundreds are bussed in, but we don’t hand out goodies to any of them.  We don’t need the wonderful chocolates tempting us.  Invariably, we eat every one that’s left over.

So we are the Grumpies for this holiday.  It’s better than being the Gordo’s.*

*Gordo according to Google means Fat.

  • Himself:  His work is light today, and no work tomorrow as they are having a big party.
  • Myself:  Enjoyed working on the shelves yesterday but know my chair was in the way.
  • Reading:  ”Young Mrs. Savage,” another D. E. Stevenson.  The spine is attached by layers of tape, and the pages are so brittle they tear them when I turn them.  I know it is going to have a happy ending, but I still want to read it.
  • Gratitude’s:  The ladies at work, Robin for her drawings on Facebook, G for everything.

  1. Our trick is to buy goodies we don't like.

  2. We don't actually do Halloween evening as our street is kind of a dumping ground for hordes of kids we cannot possibly know. It doesn't feel like a neighbourhood event.

  3. Don't get kids out here in the boonies but when I lived closer to town, I gave money. I remember as a kid the money givers were my favorites. No cavities and what you don't hand out, you get to spend.

  5. I bought a 5# bag of Tootsie Roll mix and made the mistake of not stopping Robert from opening it and dumping it into the 'Halloween Candy bowl'. We have a special green plastic bowl that has been used for Halloween candy since the boys were small. I use it for other things on occasion, but have to make sure it's empty when Halloween rolls around. Needless to say, almost all of the candy is gone. Too tempting by half...
