9-11

There are those moments that move the world.  In my small space, not only am I deeply moved and saddened by the horror September 11, 2001, but personally I feel selfish too.  Selfish because that day was my 60th birthday.

I awoke that morning of 9-11 to see the twin towers come crashing to the ground.  I sat immobile, sipping my coffee, frozen in the horror of the hours before me knowing that war was to come.

Until this year, I have been unable to celebrate another year of life in the midst of so much death and horror.  Others with the same birthday won’t even talk about the day, and there are some that moved their birthday to another space in time.

Tonight I will go out to dinner with the Great Geezer.  A quiet meal by the bay while other’s mourn.  A time with Gee to say thank you for being there for me.

  1. I am sorry about your birthday. I've had several, personal sad events happen on mine. Nothing horrific, but still makes it hard to celebrate. But think of another year well-lived and look forward to one more.

  2. I get it. My granddaughter Julia turns 13 today, and my sons father and I married on today in 1968. We just keep keeping and I am grateful we are here to do that.

  3. Happy Birthday to you. David was 83 yesterday and felt the same way. Awful to have your special day marred by such tragic events. Have a nice meal with G. Take care. Dianne

  7. I, for one, am happy to have a reason to enjoy this date again. I do know how you feel however....we buried my dearest sister in law on my birthday a few years ago...and that is what always comes to mind on my birthday.

  8. I have friends and relatives who faced that that dilemma on a -- dare I say --smaller scale. A loved one passed away on a holiday celebrated with major participation by the departed one's extended family.

I know the horror and numbers impacted are not the same, but the pain was real and recurring. One family coped by changing how and where they celebrated and they preceded festivities with a thoughtful acknowledgment of the life now gone and a quiet prayer of thanksgiving for the time and good memories they had shared with their loved one. It seems you, too, have arrived at a solution that is filled with love and thoughtfulness. Every blessing in your next 12 months of life richly lived.
