Road Trip

High desert view outside of Tehachapi, 2009.

Himself: Applied for a few jobs, used his lamp, shopped for Duck papers, fun computer time, shopped more, dinner, meeting.

Herself: Wrote, worked, shopped a bit too (among the truly dedicated scrapbookers) for Duck papers and things for the chapbooks, priced the books….I print the front page, supply a disc in Word, supply the paper, it is still 11 cents a page, library, and out for a Greek salad for dinner….pie at home for desert.

Reading: A book on Battleships.

Gratitude: Sunshine, friends, daughter Lessa.

…………………...........Road Trip

…………………Pondering the width of a
…………………modern concrete highway,
…………………I watch for fragments of the
…………………old, white, ten foot wide
…………………concrete road
…………………that once held us together.

…………………Peering out car windows
…………………truck windows,
…………………camera in hand,
…………………I catch glimpses of these
…………………still sturdy lanes long forgotten
…………………cut off
…………………dangling in the face of the new
…………………amid greens
…………………there white bits in the dryness of desert
…………………there too, steeply banked curves
…………………still bordered with perfect
…………………white wooden fences
…………………like quilt seams
…………………echoing in the dry desert brush
…………………clinging to the sides of mountains
…………………that now separates us.

…………………I visit forests and follow the old
…………………while riding the new
…………………stopping to catch a view of a bridge
…………………standing alone now
…………………next to the ocean
…………………hunting down a second bridge
…………………alone here in a long forgotten valley
…………………I walk out on the span
…………………finding bits of broken glass
…………………shining like diamonds
…………………buried deep in the remaining bit of
…………………macadam,
…………………amid the yellow painted lines
…………………that divided us.
