Dr. Leroy Phelps taught at SDSU from 1966 to 1990. Perhaps in protest to department politics,
three professors retired at the same time. We helped them move out. In his retirement, Lee took up tai chi, actively
supported the Balboa Park Organ Society and the San Diego Succulent Society
while enjoying the company of his many friends.
He was one of the first to bonsai succulents. I own one of his bonsaied small succulents
that still lives despite me.
Here Lee is enjoying Phil’s BBQ licking the sauce off his
upper lip while a napkin seems firmly tucked into his turquoise necklace.
