There was lots of forgetting on
my part, but everything came out wonderfully.
We started an hour something in
advance. Parking was easy, George kindly
put my scooter together, and Margot had saved us all seats in the second
row. Once we convinced the senora in
front of us to place her eight balloons somewhere else than in front of our
faces, we could see what was happening.
Zoe’s Big Sister Melody came, as
did Chris, and Margot’s best friend and daughter. We truly cheered and whistled her on. Some folks like Zoe’s friend Joseph couldn’t
come, but we kept them in our hearts. We
commented that she was really the only Caucasian in her glass. Hispanics predominated. When we were all in school, there were no Hispanics
in our classes. G had a few, but no one
else did. I was a little surprised to
see the sea of beautiful brown faces.
Not only for her promotional
diploma, Zoe was also called up to get a special award in Science, and another
in the Language Arts. They had not told
her in advance, so she was more than delighted by the surprise.
The students marched in by
GPA. Those with 4.0 or better came
first, 3.5 to 4.0 next…and this was Zoe’s group. In the very back were two rows of young men
who got 2.0 and below. No promotion to 9th
grade for them.

ReplyDeleteBig time congrats to that wonderful young lady. Those extra awards I'm sure made you all so proud and how neat they were also a surprise to her. Had to smile about the balloons.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to Zoe, but two rows of those who were held back? I didn't think that happened any more. Actually, it heartens me a little. I think.
