It’s Veterans Day today. It’s a big deal in this Navy town. There’s Fleet Week. Open ships at the Broadway Pier. Parades too. Lots of fuss even up at Fort Rosecrans with it’s acres of newly aligned grave markers.
To make it worse, both G and I are Army. I admit, I was the worst hire the military ever had. They put me and my math learning disability in the Finance Corps. There have been several really good benefits of my joining the military though. The GI Bill was one. It took me eight years to graduate college, but I did it in the end. The GI Bill stuck with me through many of those years.
They will bury me too. Not at Fort Rosecrans high above the ocean, where I would prefer to go, but in Miramar up on a hot dry mesa. Rosecrans is full. George will be with me. It’s a great money saver. Makes me laugh.
There are many like me here on the high point. We didn't go to war, but we admire and support those that did. Some of us pushed paper around. My father did during WWII. George pushed punch cards. I pushed payroll sheets and all their copies.

- Myself: Putting the sewing area to rights. Sewing machine away and next quilt fabric out. Writing here, reading here, eating a couple of meals.
- Reading: Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets. Lots of fun.
- Watching: A recorded J Leno’s Garage, and a live J Leno’s Garage.
- Photo: Ft. Rosecrans above the sea.
- Weather: Perfection, 76 and Sunny.
- Gratitude’s: That I found my Ft. Rosecrans Photos.
A day of remembering and honoring all those who sacrificed their lives. The cemetery is in a beautiful location.
ReplyDeleteHey, I admire those who wore the uniform and served where needed. I am happy that the benefits have been helpful. You earned them.
ReplyDeleteMy dad was in Italy at the end of WWII and did not talk about it. I think those who served whether in conflict, in peacetime overseas, or shuffling papers at home should be thanked. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteMy aunt was in the WAC and was a model featured in photo ads encouraging women to enlist. She was really attractive, as was my other aunt who modeled clothing. Thank you and George for serving. Hugs to both. (I really should go back and re-read Harry Potter--such a great series.

ReplyDeleteBelated Happy Veterans Day! I am proud of you and George.
ReplyDeleteI don't think they were ready for us.
ReplyDeleteArt used his GI Bill to do his graduate work also and I think we’ll end up in Punchbowl someday.
ReplyDeleteI had family in WWI, then WWII who were overseas, some in combat zones in the first war, those not in the second war. Belated thanks for your service.
