MAY DAY

Mission Bay, Point Loma, and the Pacific Ocean from Kate Sessions Park.

Not all countries celebrate May Day any more.  When I was a kid we wrapped May Poles with streamers and snuck little bouquets on neighbor’s doorsteps.  I don’t think kids know to do that anymore.  Military functions and parades took over the innocence.  It’s a delightful, naive, and loving vanished bit of culture.

No sun today.  From that mountain we could only see fog today.  From here we have little culture today, but we have a delightful lily growing next to our garage.  Neighbors saved the bulb once.   They moved, and I went over and dug it up from their yard.  Tho the gardeners have cut it off once, it’s grown back gloriously.  It appears to be our gesture to the season.

  1. That's an impressive flower. I love it when they just won't quit.

It is supposed to go up to 21C/70F today, but I don't think it's going to make it as there is a lack of sun.

  3. It is a beautiful lily. When I was a kid, we wove paper baskets of colored paper strips, put in daffodils and hung the baskets on neighbor's door knobs.

    1. Yes, I forgot about the baskets. We used geraniums or roses.

  4. Rained all day in Northern Ireland. When I was a child we had a tradition of May Altars which was in homage to the Virgin Mary. Our mother encouraged us to make posies of spring flowers which we placed in front of statues of the BVM. I loved this but more from a love of spring flowers than a love of the mother of God. Spring is late here. We have primroses and wood anemones but, as yet, no violets, bluebell or cuckoo flower.

  5. We never celebrated May 1 to my knowledge.

That’s one determined and beautiful flower.

  6. Happy May Day. I vaguely remember dancing around a may pole with streamers in school. It seems to be a forgotten holiday. Beautiful Lily.

  7. The Lily is certainly enjoying all the water it has been getting.

  8. Oh my! Your amaryllis is absolutely gorgeous. Love that rich color.

Schools in Hawaii always celebrated May Day. There's even a song with lyrics I still remember. "May Day is lei day in Hawaii. Garlands of flowers everywhere..." And the 5th grade class always got to do the maypole too.

  9. It's still a big deal in Hawaii. May day is "Lei Day" and there is hula, flowers, and music everywhere. I lived in Honolulu as a grade school kid and the schools always planned and put on a big program. Here not so much but I did get those little woven baskets of flowers on my doorknob from the little girls when I lived in my house a few years ago. I think its faded away here too.

  10. What a gorgeous Lily! It's the epitomy of perseverance in trying to live! I have a plant that I'm nursing on the layout. When I bought it, it was lush and filled the top of a 1 gal. pot. Then it began to die and I was left with about 6 leaves. I stroked, watered and coaxed those few leaves and now it's showing signs of coming around. Plants like to be talked to. You must have talked to that Lily a lot!!! LOL

  11. Dentists look in my mouth and see $$$ -- I've lost one crown (upper) and am not going to get it replaced. I've thought about it and unless things change, I'll keep what I have going for me. Lots of hours in the chair and oodles of money to keep my own teeth. I don't blame you one whit!
