FROM A RED CHRISTMAS

Right in the middle of dinner prep, the microwave died. The latch on the handle that is. It did give us 24 years of good service. Old indeed. It could be repaired, but the new microwaves have 1200 Watts in 2.0 cubic foot. And the old one was one cubic foot at 700 Watts. I always had a nagging worry that the food we cooked in the old one wasn’t quite cooked enough.

First thing this morning we were off to his teeth cleaning appointment. Then Costco for gas, and we thought we could get a new microwave there too. Nope, only over the stove models. Home Depot had only over the stove models, as did Dixie Line. On our way to the next two spots, Walmart and Best Buy, we stopped in at Appliance Alley. They had one. Everything else is off the coast on one of 87 ships waiting to unload in LA or Long Beach.

It may be black and chrome, but we bought it and it fit. Can’t ask for more than that.

  • Himself: Went to a lot of effort to get us a new microwave. Men’s meeting tonight.
  • Myself: Took a book and went along. A grey dark day. It’s cold too.
  • Reading: After reading a historical survey of the much loved liner < http://ssmaritime.com/canberra.htm SS Canberra> I began reading “A Very Strange Way To Go To War” by Andrew Vine. Not really very well written, but a fascinating read anyway.
  • Watching: 60 Minutes. Mary Berry on KPBS.
  • Photo: Mine: Stripy Balls and one of G’s mother’s bears on the camel chests.
  • Gratitude: I worried about returning that call, and no one answered. LOL

  1. That was an old working microwave! Unfortunate how counter-top models are stuck in the supply jam. What is the beautiful wooden chest behind the bear? Looks like it holds an electric radio or some device. It's history begs to be told... curious Linda in Kansas

    1. The bear is sitting on a pair of real camel chests that came from Pakistan. Behind him is my grandma's white bookcase. Yes, that's a fancy wooden box that G made in woodworking class on the bookcase. Inside the glass door is a brass HO gauge railway car.

  2. We have never bought a microwave but have been gifted several. The one we have now was given to us by friends who moved out of state. It's fancy but the only thing we use it for is to heat up leftovers for lunch.

    1. If I am in a hurry, I will run potatoes through it. Mainly used for leftovers here too.

  3. My goodness. What is going on in the world when you can't buy a microwave.

  4. You would think microwaves would be available in a lot of stores.
About your question why are the plastic flowers there, they were for sale. Lots of people walk by there so maybe that was a good spot to display and sell them.

    1. The microwaves are on the ships anchored off the coast. At gcaptain:

This will give you a feeling for the problem.

  5. Think you will like the higher powered one. Most timing directions call for at least 1000 watts. Mine is 700 too so I always cooked a little longer. It it said 4.5 minutes, I'd do it for 5. Good to be aware they are out on a ship somewhere. I'll be gentle with mine. Enjoy.

    1. Who knew the handle would break on ours. Now we have too find the place to discard the old one.

  6. I'm intrigued by your mention of a "men's meeting." I've been attending such for many years, and wondered about yours... Oh, and we do see that incredible queue of cargo ships from the cliff in Laguna Beach.

  7. The new appliances are way better these days. You did well with a microwave which lasted 24 years.
