A TRAIN TRIP

2017: Amtrak in the LA station ready to head north.

A friend of ours is traveling around America on the train.  He’s riding in the luxury of a private car, something I’ve never done.  Still, his enthusiasms led me to my train pictures for one particular image I could use to talk about taking a train trip.  Of course, I didn’t just find one that symbolized the trips.  I found myself lost in the many images that brought me happiness.  I thought I might show you a few.

2017: Miles of empty coastline.

 2017 Gantry on Vandenburgh AFB

George went to a lot of trouble to get an almost in focus image of one of the Vandenburgh Missile gantries.

The Amtrak Coast Starlight travels through miles of empty rolling hills, past beautiful wetlands, and right through the middle of our crowded cities.

River Mill Dam outside Portland OR.

Seeing the wonderful views, seeing the friends and family makes me want to take this trip right now today.  Although the friend is long gone, the family is still with us.

  • Himself:   Laundry, bread, cookies, gaming, being funny.
  • Myself:  Did leaves most of yesterday.  Started to do more leaves but got distracted by train pictures.
  • Reading:  Randal Garrett’s TO MANY MAGICIANS
  • Watching:  NCIS
  • Photos:  Mine and G’s
  • Weather:  40’s earlier, low 60’s now with a few high clouds.
  • Gratitude’s:  That I can leaf later.

  1. The train trip north to Portland is great. Too many stairs now.

  3. I looked into a train across the USA. I wonder what became of that.

    1. We loved doing that. The food was repetitious and the track rough, but we loved it.

  4. I guess the romance of train travel is not dead.

  5. We know a couple (actually more than one) who own a "private varnish" car and travel all over with it. They offer seats (with meals) for a somewhat reasonable price, considering. We've never taken advantage of it. We've waited too long now.

  6. I love photography for the ability to time travel. Younguns don't understand that.

  7. My grandmother used to take my sisters and me to Boston on the train during the holidays. We used to go to Jordan Marsh to have our photo taken with Santa and see their Christmas village display. We had lots of fun and now lots of happy memories.

  8. I just showed your photos to Art. He was stationed at Vandenberg AFB for a couple of years. He does remember those missile things. We've never done an Amtrack trip. It sounds like so much fun.

    1. It is lots of fun. You could board it in LA, go north to Portland and then go east to Chicago. :)

  9. I've ridden on a train only once in my life. when I was a child I would spend a couple of weeks with my aunt and uncle in east Texas. one summer my mother didn't feelik driving me there and put me on the train to Tyler where they picked me up and then drove back to Jacksonville where they lived. I barely remember it.

  10. I always intended to do an Amtrak trip in a private room as a distant older cousin often wrote of doing back in the 1950s and later. When I was younger I couldn't take the time needed from work. I think now that I probably won't be taking such a trip as the years are running out and I'm running down. I remember an interesting overnight train trip in coach with my mother in the 1940s during WWII.
