SPEECHES AND COSTUMES

All the things we normally do in the hot summer days have now been cancelled or changed.  In the beginning, everything was cancelled.  Just this weekend, everything was changed.  You and I know that change is a normal thing.  Change via ZOOM is a 21st century thing.

Comic Con will be online this year.  We are going.  The World AA convention is already online.  We will be going.  The local Spring Round Up will be online a little late.  Late is better than never, and we will be going.  My new computer will render speeches and costumes clear as a bell.

Best of all, the new California safety rules will let me have my very unruly, now grey hair styled on Thursday.  All those restaurants and museums that just opened now have to close too.  I didn’t hear our Governor being chastised by anyone for opening our parking lots when told not to.

Volunteering

I dug in to sort and find homes for all my sewing stuff yesterday.  Today I am so tired that I am not at all functional.  The last thing I need to do is put the bedspread on the bed, and for some reason, I find that one thing really hard to do.
Could it be because the flowered sheets I have on the bed right now are totally worn out?
The Midway Museum partially opens today.  George had wanted to volunteer there.  The docent training is arduous and long.  While he was working, he couldn’t  do it.  Now that he is retired, he has the time.  My volunteer job with the library is still on hiatus, darn it.  The sun us finally coming out from behind the June Gloom, and it brightens up the day.

COVID 19 AND US

The Covid 19 virus is in a great hurry here.  All those non-believers, those ‘it won’t get to me’ folks, those off to the bar or the beach young-uns are now catching the virus.  They are the ones who won’t wear a mask or stay 6 feet away from their friends.

The “I don’t need to wear a mask,” they say.  We are all violating their freedoms.  We all mourn their unfinished lives when they die.

“More fool them,” I say.

Both G and I are back to the stage where we wish the governor would shut the state down again.  No such luck. So we stay home.  We still have a mountain of things to move back in.  Today the sewing stuff.  I’m truly grateful that G carried it all up our steep stairs without a complaint.  Now it is my job to find a home for it all.

IN THE MIDST OF

…of settling in, of moving back in to the house, George gets to go back to docent at the Automotive Museum.  I am left with the trivia of settling, while he gets to run after small children yelling “No.”    Yes he remembered to wear his knee braces.  Yes, he also started a load of laundry as he left.

Everything seems tangled though it is getting sorted slowly.   Magazines.  We have National G, Smithsonian, Sierra Club, Westways, and all those other magazines that come with memberships.  You would be proud of me.  I am carefully looking through each volume and reading every article that interests me.  G isn’t reading every page, but then again, he’s looking at every article.

Upstairs is still a horror story, but the bed is where it is supposed to be and made.  Downstairs is getting itself in order.  Only one corner of the room looks as if it is lost in lower Slobovia.  I will tackle that next week.

UP

So up I pulled myself up the stairs, and everyone cheered.  In the afternoon, George and I went mattress hunting.  He found what he liked on line, we went to that particular store, and he laid on a “medium” mattress.  He didn’t like it.  We both liked the “firm” one.  With a twenty year warrantee on the mattress and a ten year warrantee on the cover, we figure this will be the last one we buy if we live to 100.

Yesterday, the eldest child showed up with her youngest daughter, and they put everything in the living room back in the bedroom.  This morning we were faced with a mountain of boxes and bundles that had to be translated back into living things.

Dear G didn’t sleep well, so I think a nap is in order.

  • Myself:  My new computer “just” fits.  I too am tired.  Mexican for dinner last night.  Lots of time with Zoe.

    CHEMO BRAIN

Chemo Brain.  I’ve been looking through the old phone and address books and not finding what I was looking for.  I’m sure I will eventually re-learn how to use my programs, or my anythings, but if I hadn’t had G handy today, I would be sinking in deep gooey muck instead of re-learning things.

Yes, I confess, the empty spots in my brain have really been bothering me.  I’d really been wanting to know how things came out in the end, or blossomed into something else, and now where was I?  So throwing up my hands in dismay, I spent much of the afternoon re-learning how to use Photoshop and learning the new Blogger.  When I  couldn’t figure things out, I called on George.   I am very grateful he put up with me, for without his part in my life I wouldn’t have this entry.

    ORTS 126

    ·         Trying to learn Windows 10, a new computer, and new programs all at once has been enlightening.  So far, I have ascertained that I don’t need to have my pictures hosted on Blogger’s new template.  It may seem complicated: take image, put it in a well-marked file, put it on a host program, and get the host address from the host program.  I have been doing it this way since I joined Blogger.  My backup blog is on Prosebox.  It Needs a Host.  Then again, I have a blog on Needy-Wordpress too.  I can’t find that one though.  If you don’t get a note from me, I either pressed the wrong button, or the template demands a name and Password I don’t have handy.
    ·         Tabor wrote an interesting entry today about neighbors.  Our buildings weren’t designed to encourage neighborliness at all.  We all enter and leave out our garage doors.  After 23 years, we at least wave hello though we don’t know their names.  This neighborhood used to be totally Conservative…actually our whole city used to be Conservative.  We lean to the left now, and I was thinking that many of my neighbors might not really want to know us if they knew us.  Ah, reality.
    ·         The new 42 units across the street are having their AC units lifted to their roofs by a large, noisy, crane.  Even cement mixers are quieter.
    ·         The plants have been watered.  Thanks G.  The covers moved up on the bed.  George has been beating himself at Spider Solitaire with a win score of 11,111.  The laundry is done and put away, and the meatloaf sliced and ready for sandwiches.  What more could one want from the start of a day.

    ·         -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Himself:  Considering pulling said vee-hickles out and making me a little box to stand on to get into bed.

Myself:  Now I can’t find the link to the new blogger.  Now I can't turn off the HTML Setting.
    •       Reading:  Still reading the Gunther mystery.
    •       Gratitude:  That G is doing so well.

    WORLD AIDS MONTH

This is the second Pandemic I’ve lived through in my lifetime.  The first one, AIDS, killed off many of my friends in the music and theater worlds.  So far, no one I know has died of Covid 19.  I have grandchildren who are gay.  I worry about them.  And I wonder if this seven month sickness I had was Covid 19.

    SLAW

George has developed finesse with the simple cabbage.  One of the first nights I was home, he served me a simple slaw.  Last week, he did it again.  Tonight he asked if I would like a chopped salad or a cold slaw.  “Slaw I replied.”

He’s always served sausage with noodles and slaw.  Now he has turned the cabbage into a wall smiling at the world.  I watched him rummaging in amongst the spices, and I quickly turned to my recipe books.  Bobbie Flay puts orange juice and honey in his slaw.  We didn’t have any OJ, but we had Mango.  Another famous chef puts a little celery seed in his salad.  George likes raisins in his slaw.  By the time he was done with his additions which included a little sugar and a dash of rice wine vinegar, he’d created a work of art held together with a randomly large amount of mayo.

What do you like in your cold slaw.

    WATER

How are we holding up?  I was thinking that my frequent phone calls to George for help were too much.  The bed Is broken again.  He brings water.  Why water?  I’ve broken two water bottles this week.  I hope my constant requests for help don’t weigh too heavily on him.

A Day In The Sun (Picture Intensive)

A moment of quiet. As the fans go home, we guard the field and wait for the stands to be swept clear. 2007. All Photos copyright G in his real name.

Before the game, fans enter the main gate and flow up elevators, escalators and stairs to the main concourse. View from the Bistro on Toyota Terrace across the main entry to the bay. 2007.

It was warm when I got to the ball park with my coffee and donut in hand. As the sun rose beyond the high rise rooftops to hit my place on the cement, I began to follow the shade. Most of the other gates were not fortunate enough to have any shade at all.

Early in the afternoon, the Gaslamp Gate between the new Legend condo building and the Palm Court from the parking structure across the street.

The heat pounded down relentlessly at times reaching over a hundred on the cement. Often this day there was no breeze. On the field the temperature was documented at 104. Many of our Guest Service Representatives, (GSR’s,) are not young, and this heat was especially hard on them.

The first aid station paramedics worked especially hard this hot and humid Sunday. Often while I was giving directions or talking to a fan, I heard Paramedics called to downed fans. Usually it’s only drunks….

East Village Gate before the crowds arrived.

We were all urged to bring bottles of water with us, and during the game our bosses made rounds with iced buckets of bottled water. At the Command Post, water was available to us in large orange containers with spigots at the bottom. Ice was also available to those guards working the field in the sun for six some hours. Near us, the volunteers running one of the concession stands, North County Diver’s, brought the Park Avenue Gate a bucket of ice and cups of ice to me all during the game. Despite these life savers, the gate Supervisor, Cee, went home mid-game felled a second day by the heat.

The are fans enter the gates to the “Park In The Park,” an actual city park at the back of the ballpark, to watch batting practice before the game.

The game was sold out, but with the heat crushing down relentlessly, only forty-one thousand attended the game.

Forty-one thousand fans plus or minus a few as the temperature grew.

There was little shade, and what there was could only be found under the overhangs on the Field Level and on Toyota Terrace. Ba, who is a rabid Dodger fan, and G decided come to this last Dodger game here this year. Taking into account the sunshine, they bought seats near me in the shade despite the vastly greater price of forty-five dollars a seat vs sixteen they pay for their upper level season tickets.

The main concourse viewed from a window at the Bistro.

Both G and Ba as season ticket holders take part in the “Compadres” reward system. Yesterday G won a “Toyota Terrace” ticket as his pat on the back for attending all home the games. This next homestand, he not only has his regular tickets for the 14th, 16th, 17th, and Friday the 21st, he also won a ticket for the 15th.

“It’s almost too much baseball,” he said laughing.

View from the East Ramp over the Team Gate, Power Alley, facing the exit at East Village Gate.

After the game, I had reached the shaky leg state when a Supervisor asked how I was.

“Not really very good,” I told him. Frankly….for my system quits functioning at 92 degrees. He relieved me early, and hand in hand with G, I quietly shuffled off to the relative cool of dinner at Nati’s near the ocean.

Gripping my cup of ice in one hand and holding an “I” beam with another, I’m very grateful the game is over.

G catches sight of a pile of detritus on our way out.

Me: Beyond hot at the ball park yesterday. Miserable. Many fans and employees were down and cared for by the paramedics in the various first aid stations. I got pretty shaky toward the end and was let go a whole hour early. Dinner at Nati’s with Ba and G. Bed very cool out on the balcony. Today home with a fan on.

G: Very hot, even in the shade with a breeze in the 223’s at Toyota Terrace yesterday.

Duck: He told G to go to the game, and G did. We will visit later today.
